It’s the second staging of the TPDCo Tourism Quiz, and we are off to a great start! This year, we doubled the number and invited 32 primary and preparatory schools to participate. All rounds one and two matches were hosted in the resort towns of Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston, while the quarter finals to finals were recorded at the TVJ studios.
On Monday May 20th, the exciting quarter final matches started with defending champions Broughton Primary going up against first timers May Pen Primary. Having the experience, Broughton Primary clearly developed a strategy and was obviously ready to rumble. However, May Primary did their research and was not backing down from their competition.
For round one, Broughton Primary started the lead and came out with 17 points and May Pen Primary not too far behind with 8 points. For section two, tourism in 90 seconds, the students proudly displayed their knowledge of Jamaica’s tourism industry. This tells us at TPDCo that we are clearly achieving the objective to increase awareness of the sector among primary level students.
At the end of the section, Broughton maintained the lead with 32 points while May Pen was on 17 points.
The final and possibly most challenging section is one that leads to nail biting and a heightened sense of anticipation. The risk or reward section can allow teams to score as many as 6 points and lose a whopping half. By this point, May Pen saddled up, while Broughton tried to keep their composure and eye on the prize. The teams battled for the highest points and used their best man for each category, but as with every game, only one can win and for this match, it was defending champion Broughton who ended with 38 points and May Pen on 23 points.
Broughton will advance to the semi-finals and to find out who they will play, we invite you to tune in to the second quarter final match on Thursday May 23 at 6:30 pm. All matches air on Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm on Television Jamaica with a repeat on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:35 am.
