Ocho Rios

It was once just a little fishing village but Ocho Rios has emerged to become “the centre piece of Jamaica.” A charming resort along Jamaica’s north coast with much of the buzz on its main street, it has evolved into a vibrant cruise ship port with loads of attractions. The world famous and Jamaica’s most visited attraction, Dunn’s River falls which cascades some 600 feet down into the ocean is a must. Oh the thrill of reaching the top or for the less adventurous the hydro therapy provided by the various natural pools in which one can soak up the cool river water. There are a wide range of adventures for every liking. Coyaba River Gardens, Chukka with soft adventure tours, Dolphin Cove providing the treat of a lifetime, Mystic Mountain with its exhilarating bob sled and zip line adventures, horseback riding, plantation tours and Fern Gully, a dry river bed which houses several of the 250 species of ferns which thrive on this rock.

How did it get its name? We are told of two possible origins: A direct translation from the Spanish which means “eight rivers”, or a corruption of “Las chorreras” which means the spouts. This would in fact be reminiscent of the many waterfalls that are in the parish.

Ochi as it is popularly called, offers a plethora of shopping options and for those who just want a swim there are several beaches to choose from. And don’t forget this garden parish is home to legendary Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley. His original home Nine Miles and mausoleum are a favourite among visitors. Green grotto Caves is the world’s only cave which is green globe certified and is located in the Ocho Rios resort area which includes Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay and parts of St. Mary.
