Mona Preparatory emerged as the champion of the second season of the TPDCo Tourism Quiz. The St. Andrew based school triumphed over defending champions Broughton Primary with a 46-24 win. .
The competition, which was created by the Tourism Product Development Company Ltd., Has the objective to increase awareness of tourism and its benefits among primary level students.
Thirty-two schools participated in this year’s competition, which focused on core subject areas such as Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. The participants were also quizzed on tourism facts, which ranged from attractions across the island to the history of the country’s tourism sector.
According to Minister of Tourism, Honourable Edmund Bartlett
“Even at the primary level of the education system, it is important for you (students) to learn how crucial tourism is to our country’s development. The sector has been consistently advancing and growing, making it possible for many of our locals to improve their quality of life.
As students at this level, you have started to realize your career preferences and have begun to explore several fields of interest. Hospitality and tourism could just be one of them.” He said
For their win, Mona Preparatory walked away with the major prizes which included the championship trophy, $100,000.00 cash prize for the school; from donors the team also received passes to Chukka Adventures, Beaches Negril, Mystic Mountain, Swamp Safari Village, Half Moon Hotel, gift vouchers and dictionaries from Sangster’s Bookstores and a tour of the Oasis of the Seas cruise line, courtesy of the Falmouth Land Company.
The runners up Broughton Primary received Replica trophies Day, Passes to Hilton Resort Half Moon hotel, Chukka Adventures, Mystic Mountain, a Cash prize of $75,000 dollars, Team Jamaica scholarships, TPDCo and Jamaica Tourist Board, gift packages, Tour of the Montego Bay Marine Park and four $1000 gift vouchers and four dictionaries from Sangsters bookstores
The third place school, Corinaldi Avenue Primary was awarded a cash prize of 50, 000 dollars, passes to Dolphin Cove, Moon Palace Resorts, Rafting on the Rio Grande, tour of the Montego Bay Marine Park, lunch at Pier One at the Waterfront, passes for tour and complimentary ice-cream at Devon House and gift packages from the Jamaica Tourist Board.
While fourth place school Naggo Head Primary received passes to Dolphin Cove, Kool Runnings Water Park, Rafting on the Rio Grande, tour of the Montego Bay Marine Park, lunch at Pier One at the Waterfront, passes for tour and complimentary ice cream at Devon House and gift packages from the Jamaica Tourist Board.
The 2019 staging of the TPDCo Tourism Quiz was endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies – Jamaica Tourist Board, Jamaica Vacations and the Tourism Enhancement Fund as well as Television Jamaica.
