The TPDCo Tourism Quiz, a quiz competition created by the Tourism Product Development Company Limited, will officially commence airing on Television Jamaica, starting Monday May 20, 2019. Viewers will be given the opportunity to tune in to the quarter finals, semifinals and finals on Mondays and Thursday at 6:30 pm, with a repeat on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:35 am. The broadcast will conclude on June 10, 2019
The competition, which is in its second year, has the objective to increase awareness of the local tourism sector and its benefits among primary level students in the grades 4-6 year groups. This is also in keeping with the Ministry of Tourism’s pillar of tourism growth, “to develop the human capital”.
Over 30 primary and prep schools across the 14 parishes of Jamaica participated in this year’s competition, with the first rounds hosted in the resort areas of Negril, Montego Bay, Kingston and Ocho Rios. The students were equipped with tourism related information including the Our Jamaica publication and TPDCo publications, The Adventures of Sprucey and Limey and the Team Jamaica Handbook. Along with tourism related material, the Primary Level Exit Profile (PEP) curriculum was also included.
According to Executive Director of TPDCo, Dr. Andrew Spencer, “the quiz will allow students to delve into tourism and understand how Jamaica benefits from the sector. This information is crucial for the demographic, as they begin to show preferences for certain careers and develop an understanding of society. I am also happy to have the endorsement of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and support from our parent ministry and the other agencies”
Schools will contend for prizes from donors and sponsors such as Beaches, Montego Bay Marine Park, Devon House, Half Moon hotel, Dolphin Cove, Yahman Adventures, Team Jamaica, tour and lunch on board the Allure of the Seas, among others.
